Church
Lab

Healthy churches are not perfect churches. They are churches where the gospel is central, the whole body is growing, local believers carry real responsibility, and people are being formed and sent.

Two assessments. One purpose: help the body of Christ grow healthier.
Healthy church basics

Five questions worth asking.

You do not need a complicated system to begin. These five questions give a simple way to notice whether a church is rooted, shared, sustainable, and sent.

The center

What makes us a church?

The gospel of Jesus is the center. Programs, personalities, buildings, and events can serve the church, but none of them can replace Christ.

  • Jesus' life, death, and resurrection
  • Repentance and faith
  • A people formed around the gospel
The authorities

Who shapes us?

A healthy church learns to listen to God's Word and depend on the Holy Spirit rather than building around preference, personality, or outside expertise.

  • God's Word
  • The Holy Spirit
The people

Who carries ministry?

Leaders equip the saints. Ordinary believers serve one another. Some are sent beyond the church. Health grows when ministry belongs to the body.

  • Leaders who equip
  • Saints who serve
  • Sent ones who go
Local stewardship

Can the body carry it?

Maturing churches increasingly carry their own biblical life and mission rather than depending permanently on someone outside the church.

  • Self governing
  • Self theologizing
  • Self supporting
  • Self propagating
The rhythms

What keeps us alive?

Healthy church life becomes visible in ordinary biblical practices that shape believers together over time.

  • God's Word
  • Prayer
  • Fellowship
  • Lord's Supper
  • Baptism
Look for life

A healthy church becomes visible.

Health is not only what a church believes on paper. It shows up in what ordinary believers know, practice, carry, reproduce, and give away.

RootedPeople know the gospel and are being shaped by Scripture.
SharedResponsibility and ministry are carried across the body.
SentThe church makes disciples and participates in mission beyond itself.
A useful warning

Do not confuse strength with health.

A church can have excellent preaching, strong finances, large attendance, or skilled leaders and still have areas that need strengthening. Health asks whether the body is becoming biblically mature, mutually responsible, locally stewarded, and able to reproduce what it has received.

Not a verdictAssessment should open conversation, not label a church.
Not one scoreHealthy patterns can be strong in one area and developing in another.
Not staticChurch health grows through faithful practice over time.
A simple strengthening cycle

Assess. Discuss. Practice. Repeat.

The goal is not to collect scores. The goal is to turn insight into simple, reproducible practices that help the church follow Jesus together.

01

Assess

Use Church Health Lab or Gift Lab to notice what is already present and what may need attention.

02

Discuss

Talk with trusted leaders and believers. Ask for examples, context, and perspectives you may have missed.

03

Practice

Choose one small biblical practice that ordinary believers can actually repeat together.

04

Repeat

Revisit the same area later. Look for growing stewardship, healthier patterns, and multiplication.

Choose your starting point.

Start with the health of the church, or start with the gifts God may use through you to strengthen it.
